The upsurge in cyberfraud and cybercrime incidents in Kashmir valley has pressing a great concern among the populace in recent times. The unscrupulous cybercriminals have been preying on the gullible locals who are susceptible to falling into their nefarious traps due to the lack of awareness and education about online security measures among the general public. It is unfortunate that such incidents have been increasing in frequency, posing a great threat to the economic and social well-being of the region.

The perpetrators of these cybercrimes have been utilizing various techniques to deceive their victims into providing sensitive information, ultimately leading to the loss of financial assets. One of the most common modus operandi is through video calling scams, in which swindlers use bogus social media profiles to lure unsuspecting victims into video calls. During the call, these fraudsters may engage in lascivious activities and subsequently threaten to disseminate the video with the victim’s acquaintances unless a substantial ransom is paid.

To circumvent falling prey to these scams, it is indispensable to be cautious when communicating with unfamiliar individuals online and verify the identity of anyone requesting personal information or financial assistance. Where the fraudsters impersonate as authoritative figures or representatives of reputable organizations. They lure their targets into sharing confidential details such as banking credentials, passwords, and personal identification numbers (PINs), under the guise of verification or security purposes.

The use of sophisticated technology and social engineering tactics have made it increasingly difficult to detect and prevent such cybercrime incidents. The situation is further compounded by the lack of awareness and knowledge among the local populace, making them more vulnerable to being victimized. The absence of stringent laws and regulations concerning cybercrime has only exacerbated the problem, providing a conducive environment for cybercriminals to operate with impunity.

It is imperative that the authorities and relevant stakeholders take immediate and effective measures to curb the menace of cybercrime in the region.
